Metacity Window Manager
|

The Fedora Rendering Project has released information complete with demos about their efforts add support for 3d accelerated desktop effects.
"AIGLX is a project that aims to enable GL-accelerated effects on a standard desktop. We have a lightly modified X server (that includes a couple of extensions), an updated Mesa package that adds some new protocol support and a version of metacity with a composite manager. The end result is that you can use GL effects on your desktop with very few changes, the ability to turn it on and off at will, and you don't have to replace your X server in the process."

XOrg 6.8 supports true transparencies now!
But I had missed support for transparencies in metacity, then I wrote a little and nice patch for metacity 2.8.5.

expocity is an effort to integrate an efficient means of switching between applications into the window manager metacity. After pressing a keystroke, your window manager will present you a complete overview of all open windows and you can select the window, you want to switch to, visually.
You no longer have to search a too full taskbar or the tablist for the right window. Just point at it.
Everybody is talking about such a feature and that it would require the new freedesktop.org X-Server... well, expocity is an extension for metacity enabling this on a standard X-Server!
More info and a screenshot can be found
here.
If you want to try it out yourself, get the patch from
here and apply it to the current CVS version of metacity.
Have fun! .... Martin Grimme
