An epiphany in browsing

Epiphany Web Browser
Epiphany Web Browser

As many of you know, the former maintainer of Galeon, Marco Pesenti Gritti, recently started a new project based on the Galeon codebase known as Epiphany. The main goals of the Epiphany web browser are simplicity, usability, following the GNOME HIG, and GNOME integration. Epiphany is available from GNOME cvs in the "epiphany" module.

Ed Dumbill has written a nice short little review of Epiphany in its current developmental state, complete with a few screenshots, and some download links.

Also, here is another screenshot of Epiphany taken by James Willcox showing a patch that provides load feedback in the tabs and a bookmark context menu.

On another note, If any of you out there would be interested in contributing to the Epiphany project, Marco could use some help with the Epiphany website

Re: An epiphany in browsing

"Oh no! It's easy to use! We can't feel smart anymore!"

This is both misinformed and exaggerated. You don't understand a thing of how they REALLY feel.

Galeon 1 was my favorite browser. IMHO it beats Internet Explorer, Konqueror and Mozilla alltogether. The reason why I like it so much is because of it's power:

- Settings like enabling/disabling Java(Script)/popups are right under the Settings menu, which makes them VERY easy to access.

- Nearly everything is right- and middleclickable: I can rightclick on a bookmarks menu item to get a popup menu. I can rightclick on the Forward button to open that page in a new tab.

All these (and a lot I haven't mentioned) small details are exactly what makes me able to browse faster and EASIER.

So "Oh no! It's easy to use! We can't feel smart anymore!" is just another brainless way of stamping developers in the ground and marking them as elitists. To me, and probably them, all these things together ARE easy. They make the software powerful and fast to use. EXACTLY what some power users like us want.

So stop marking everybody who doesn't want to loose power over software as "elitists".
