GRE licensing issues

It's worth noting that newer releases of Mozilla will no longer be Open Source / Free Software as the Mozilla team have decided to adopt a non-free license for their soon-to-be core component, the Gecko Runtime Environment (GRE):

If a developer chooses to package the GRE with their embedding application software, the GRE license requires that the developer redistribute the GRE in its entirety. This requirement will ensure that any future embedding applications (which are compatible with a GRE version) can make a reasonably safe assumption about what's in an installed GRE package.

You can read more about the new proprietary Mozilla license.

This means that it will no longer be possible to redistribute Mozilla with Debian or RedHat, which have Open Source-only policies.

Does anyone know why Mozilla.org is making this move? It seems to cause more trouble than it's worth, and will undoubtedly stunt Mozilla's popularity amongst *nix users.

I raised this issue with the Mozilla organisation through email, but haven't received a reply, so I'm having to resort to bringing this issue to the public eye. Hopefully they will abandon the license before it comes to the point where they can redistribute software licensed under it.
