New project: Gnoppix

GNOME
GNOME

I'm starting a project which aims to build a complete, full-featured GNOME 2.2 desktop based on Knoppix.

Naturally, I will call it "Gnoppix", and already requested the hosting to SourceForge.

I'm accepting suggestions on what Gnome/GTK applications to include, please post them in the comments.

I will post an URL as soon as SF approve/reject my request.

Re: Compression on CD...

This is a clip from an interview on OSNews.com with Klaus Knopper, Knoppix's developer, on the compression issues with the current CD build...

What compression technology does Knoppix use?

Basically gzip. The cloop-device (compressing loopback, a filesystem-independent block decompression kernel module) uses zlib. Some experiments with bzip2 lead to slightly smaller size, but cause unacceptable slow decompression. For gzip, the overall reading speed from CD is even faster than using an uncompressed stream, most likely because of less head movements.

You can read the entire interview here:

Sorry, but I can't seem to make the URL turn into a live link with this editor... :(
