New project: Gnoppix

GNOME
GNOME

I'm starting a project which aims to build a complete, full-featured GNOME 2.2 desktop based on Knoppix.

Naturally, I will call it "Gnoppix", and already requested the hosting to SourceForge.

I'm accepting suggestions on what Gnome/GTK applications to include, please post them in the comments.

I will post an URL as soon as SF approve/reject my request.

Re: MetaDistros - gnome-live is the same

Hi,

I toyed with the same idea (and name) but after some tinkering I found it better to base it on the Gentoo distro and rip scripts etc from Knoppix. Therefore I called it CenDoo. I tried to register on Sourceforge but they don't want to host distribs anymore. See -

Some notes:

Kudzu from Redhat for HW detection seems awsome (also used in KNOPPIX).

Disc compression is a must. KNOPPIX is using cloop, I preferred the CD compression already built into the kernel.

The tricky part is to get a clean CD boot. VMWare is you friend here, it will boot from ISO-files.

Too bad I don't have the time to continue my project or join this.
