by keeping the number of prefs down you keep the preferences dialogs *usable* for the other 99% of the users, the gain is huge. take a look at sawfish's or konqueror's preference dialogs, they are so overloaded its a chore to find any particular option. these are not far out ungrounded ideas, they are firmly supported by (gasp!) contolled users studies.
