AbiWord Weekly News #103

AbiWord
AbiWord

This has been a week full of surprises, and not like the nice kind, where a bank error is sided in your favour. This has been more along the lines of the revenue service wonders why your forms are in crayon, whether "Sparky" is really your six year old son or if your mistress can really count as a dependent. Luckily for us, we have Arthur Anderson and Aberdeen! Abisource went into infinite fcsk mode, and on the second day, asked, "Hey, man, this is wrong for some reason, and where do all these packets keep coming from?" It rebooted and life got better. Take heart, it didn't stop the hackers from hacking or the users from abusing. It did delay AWN for a few days.

Update:AWN for this week is also out, get it here.

To be quite honest

After some time of considering all these comments, it seems more of those with complaints are interested in complaining. If there was any belief that Abiword could honestly blowup small buildings or nuke Irac, I'm sure Dom would be handling funds from various military institutions, though, not likely through paypal.

If anyone actually thinks it worth the whine, why not check the cvs before writing out the kvetch; it's not like bonsai is cryptic or that it's hidden on the server.

If there were a large number of complaints, I might consider making specific links to individual patches, and point any false ones to websites that amuse me.

The most offensively named patch in all of the AbiWord source code refers to MSVC, and there is no blowing up or nuking, despite the fact it continues to prove to deserve it.

With all this anonymity, I can honestly say I don't see more than one person with a complaint.

As for later remarks about AbiWord's or the Weekly News' professionalism, I will point out, save for the bug graph, all the actual data is there. Furthermore, I didn't see anyone from outside the AbiCircle saying, "Ooh, ooh, I want to write the AWN! Ooh, me, Jesper, me!" The AWN maybe more light-hearted than previously, but the good news is, many people have a viable sense of humour. Anyone who says, "That's offensive because..." can't have one because the only non-offensive joke was, to quote Drew Carey, "A person and a person walk into a place."

Though I have political views, I don't place them in AWN. Though some of the hackers have religious views, they've decided to keep them out of the dev list. This is as it should be. If you actually care about my political view in reference to Iraq, I don't believe in the need for a war at this time. Yes, Irac or Iraq has many humanitarian needs at this time, but if I'm to honestly believe the U.S. is interested in terrorism, then it has more important objectives than reliving glory days and easier wars. You know why we don't hear as much about "The War On Terror?" It's because we're not doing anything new! Lebanon, Yemen and Libya are far superior terror-related risks than Iraq. And yes, I do believe the US needs to be big brother to the world; I've been fighting isolationistic views for far too long, and finally, people are starting to agree with me. This doesn't mean I think the US knows what's right. Half of the political decisions are still made on the basis of commercialism, but at least the ideals are in place.

Here's a recommendation for those who like to whine, goto abuzz.com and make your declaration in a nice editorial, and if I find your points of view interesting (i.e. not derivative dribble and partisan claptrap), assuming I get it in the mail, I will be happy to make a full and honest post there.

Otherwise, send all political beliefs you think I want to hear to Dickie, and if you're not on his ignore list in a month, I'll ask for email address.

Shoo!
