GNOME 2.22 has been released, bringing a whole ream of new apps, features and improvements to GNOME users.

Among the most significant additions in this release are the addition of a photo and video taking application that integrates with your webcam called Cheese, a new VNC viewer called Vinagre and the addition of an advanced and integrated IDE, Anjuta.

Notable improvements are the improved support for DVD playback, subtitles and VLC support in the Totem video player, an improved international clock applet, Google calendar integration in Evolution, improved accessibility for web apps and a whole new library to support networked file-systems.

Gnome's Roujin-Z Syndrome continues.

"...Bringing a whole ream of new apps..."

I think that Gnome's focus should be produce the best all-purpose desktop GUI and file manager--instead of trying to be a sponge that collects any and all decent GTK+ programs attaching them it to itself.

Every program associated with Gnome should be separable, or Gnome's depends will look like a who's-who of GTK+ programming. Will Gnome even start without Evolution anymore, or will it produce errors?

With solid state drives, there is a growing emphasis on leaner more efficient GUI installations, such as people are doing with the EEEPC, which are expected to sell 3-4 million this year. It's true that people often install Ubuntu or other distros with Gnome, but people are also installing XFCE too.

Microsoft thought that there was no limit to the percentage of the users machine they could take with Vista, but were they right?

I think that Gnome is loosing out because it's losing its modularity and independence.
