One of the most prominent of those projects, GNOME, recently underwent one of its twice-yearly updates, and the result is a compelling set of refinements.

Speed

Well, Beagle and Spotlight don't quite work the same way, but yes, I find Spotlight surprisingly slow. Not BOOM, Like SteveJ say. Actually I think the devs of all of these tools could do to look at Quicksilver, although I have to say I DO like Deskbar Applet.

By the way, some clever hacker needs to make a twin of deskbar applet that collects all my system information into a little applet instead of having popups all over.
