FileZilla 3 Preview

Bag of Software
Bag of Software

A 'new' ftp client is arriving soon for Linux. FileZilla is currently being ported over to Linux from Windows (using wxWidgets) and will arrive in the form of FileZilla 3. At present it is in alpha stage but nightly builds are available to download from the FileZilla development site.

Screenshots can be seen here with a short preview.

Will FileZilla be free software?

One of the screenshots (http://www.linuxedge.org/images/FZ3_important.png) tells the user "DO NOT distribute it [this program]". Disallowing distribution makes a program non-free, and this has nothing to do with a program being an early in development (or "alpha"). Will FileZilla be free software?

It is just telling you to

It is just telling you to not distribute it because it hasn't been released yet, is still alpha quality at the moment and the developers probably don't want to deal with bug reports now when they know that there is still plenty of work to be done.

Here is the license from their CVS repository

Denying users their software freedom should not be taken lightly

Not having been "released" is confusing if they are distributing the program now. I hope this is just an oversight and there is no intention to deny users their software freedom.

What they're doing is distributing the software in an inconsistent way—the license clearly states that distributing verbatim or modified versions is allowed, yet their additional text says that users are not to distribute a copy of the program.

If they don't want bug reports from users, they can ignore the bug reports they don't want. If they already know what's wrong with the program and they don't want others to see their buggy code, there is no reason to distribute the program at all.

I remain hopeful that they will distribute a Free Software program to do this job, but if they don't it's not a huge loss as there are already many other Free Software programs to do the same job.

Gftp vs FileZilla by Anonymous George

FZ for the win...

I've used both as well, and I can say without a doubt that Filezilla is a much much better program than GFTP

Why wxWidgets? by Anonymous George

Re: Why wxWidgets?

I don't uderstand it too.
I don't like wxwidget. Why? Because it looks always alien.
On KDE it looks to much like Gtk+ and on GNOME/XFCE it looks like no real Gtk+ app, e.g. look at the treeview.

Maybe wxwidget is a good cross-platform toolkit and maybe it looks good on windows and/or MacOS but on GNU, BSD and Unix Systems there is no Desktop were it really fits.

Therefore i encourage people to use a native Toolkit like Gtk+ or Qt. They are also cross-platform _and_ have a home at GNU, BSD and Unix Systems.

Easier? by Anonymous George

Do you really think that

Do you really think that e.g. Gnumeric, Gaim or other Gtk+ apps ported to Win32 have been rewritten "pretty much everything from scratch"?

Doh

Of course not! GTK+ is already ported to Windoze so why would Gnumeric, Gaim etc switch to another toolkit just for the porting purposes? That would be just pointless. Of course, if they did switch to another toolkit, they would have to code atleast everything having to do with GUI from scratch. But you know, programs originally written for Windoze and not coded with porting in mind aren't written using some portable toolkit. You should really think what you say.

that's great!!

whuuuoaa!! These are very great news! Linux has never had a *serious* graphical ftp client, gftp is full of bugs and is quite old [don't know about kde couterpart]. Its time is gone, now we can say welcome Filezilla!

old? by Anonymous George

purpose?

Back in the day my main OS was Windows (about 3-4 years ago) i used to use FileZilla and liked it.

Later, when going to Linux/GNOME as main OS i started to use gFTP as the client of choiche for file transfer/uploads. Today i find myself using more and more Nautlilus for scp/ftp.

Is a good thing for FileZilla to not be exclusively a Windows program, but honestly, their move may be a little to late.

I'm not sure that it's such

I'm not sure that it's such a poor idea. As long as people are willing to keep porting over software from other OSes and desktops, it will continue to help to enrich the desktop that Gnome provides be exposing its users and developers to new techniques and popular interaction metaphors.

Nautilus

I, too, use Nautilus for my sftp needs. It is just so convenient to be able to use the same program for all my file browsing and handling, and I can just have a link on my desktop and drag files there and voila, they are copied to remote site.

not a troll, but seriously... by Anonymous George

Actually FileZilla also does

Actually FileZilla also does SFTP, I use it regularly under Windows and find it more convenient then the command-line for some operations. I assume the Linux version will support SFTP too then it will be one of those programs one can use regardless of what machine/OS it is working on.

SFTP by Anonymous George

Sure

If you download stuff you don't need a ftp client for it. A browser is sufficent. But if you happen to upload data, then ftp is used a lot and then an ftp client is very handy.
Just go and sign up for some free web space and you most certainly are forced to ftp. Often you have the choice to use some sort of webform for upload. But seriously, they are a pain in the a** to use.
