Linux and Audio Production: Simplicity Required

Gnome Multimedia

Jono Bacon has an interesting article on O'Reilly talking about the challenges still facing him as a musician when using GNU/Linux based solutions. If you have an interest in helping improve the Multimedia experience under Linux you should take a look at the article to get some ideas for areas to investigate and work on in order to improve the situation. Many people are interested in sorting out the USB soundcard issue for instance, but nobody has had the resources to take on the coding for it yet.

Jack

Jack should be part of all desktop Linux distributions!
(I do not use ! loosely, but I have here.)

I tried to get the Linux kernel people to include it, but that doesn't seem to have worked. The next Linux kernel will have lower latency, but we still need that virtual file system to run Jack.

It is not practical to expect everyone to custom compile the every kernel that comes along, in the same way that it is too much to install every nVidia kernel module that comes along.

I also plead for it to be included on Ubuntu, but I haven't gotten any response yet.

Isn't it about time that something was done about Linux audio production?

There are a lot of applications that run Jack; it would be nice if some more Linux distributions did too.

There are hundreds of mp3 tools designed to rip musicians off, but when it comes to helping musicians make and record music for you, everyone sits around with their hands in their pockets.

For shame!
