Abiword heading in the right direction: OpenDoc is fundamental

Adding OpenDocument support and making it the default format should be a high priority for a number of reasons. I congratulate the Abiword developers for their initial OpenDoc support and I hope they will continue to work on OpenDoc till it is fully and properly supported. Here's why:

1) The open source world will be able to show that you can change applications and retain all your data (Kword, OO.org and Abiword). I cannot emphasize enough how impressive this is for government and educational settings that are evaluating open source. They want to make sure that if a better app comes along, they can move their data. Or if an app is more suited for a specific task, such as light desktop publishing in the case of the frames-based kword, they can do that and yet save their work in the same format.

2) Abiword's survival, by which I mean its ability to grow and hold on to its user and development community, is greatly enhanced by profiting from the popularity of OpenOffice. You can say we are compatible with OpenDoc's files, but much faster.

3) The more applications that support OpenDoc, the more that we can make sure that the file format is complete enough to do everything that we may want to do in the future.

In summary, for strategic and technical reasons, I find your decision to support OpenDoc to be an important and clever move. But don't just support it as a plug-in. Do everything in your power to make it the default!

Here's hoping that you realize how much Abiword would gain from making OpenDoc the default format.

Best of luck and thanks for a very promising application
