You don't understand people

I'm sure you are a very knowledgeable technical guy who understands computers quite well, but you don't seem to understand people comparably well. Suppose I am, unlike yourself, not a technology professional or hobbyist. Are you therefore telling me I should not be able to administrate my own computer, because I am not "competent enough to handle what a root login gives" me?

I really don't see how this remark can make any sense at all, unless you wish for GNU/Linux to remain a "nerds-only" operating system. Personally, I hope that won't persist in being the case.

You need to change your mindset. The onus is not on your users to learn more about computers. They don't care about computers. They care about getting their work done. The onus is on you to allow them to focus on their work, and hiding folders they don't care about by default is a good step in that direction.
