GNOME - Future ideas

GNOME
GNOME

I've created an article with mockups and ideas for things that I'd like to see GNOME 3.* doing in the future.
The article can be seen here, with more ideas and things available through my blog, such as the Scoop proposal, and a mockup of how to make drag and drop far easier with spatial nautilus.

Some good, some bad stuff

All in all, i think your suggestions are good stuff. Especially fixing the position and grouping of tasks (folders/apps) and applets in special areas looks very useful - somehow like the notification area concept for all types of items. I'm not sure about the application info area but given a lot of space, this might work. Else i would rather not have this. The "Scoop" OTOH looks very useful, i just don't understand what visualizations are good for - then, this is not your problem ;-)

The menu always on the top edge is a nice idea i love in MacOS, incl. OS X, but the proposed way is not good. If the top edge is to be the menu of an app, all Gnome elements must go. Incorporate them into the menu entries or just show them if the desktop/Nautilus has the focus but there is no way i would like to deal with an Applications/Actions menu entry when i'm doing word processing or whatever.

The transparency for not-focused windows is finally a useful application of transparency but it brings problems as mentioned earlier. Sometimes i want to be able to read the non-focused window while using another one. A very low blending percentage is in order here.

The Nautilus information is good enough how it is. Today Nautilus shows me the number of items in a folder and shows me more detail when i zoom in (too bad this is not working with the mouse wheel - why?) Your suggestion would be really nice as a pop-up, but not as default appearance. Also i would like to know how files are shown in this view.

I also like your Rhythmbox suggestions and your attempt to create a way to replace spring-loaded folders is promising. I guess, it would work rather nicely with your "Scoop".

So, all in all, these suggestions are nice. Some are actually quite desirable. Some are not so great but then it's better than anything i read from Eugenia of OSNews fame ;-)
