Desktop Environment User Interface Surveys

Usability

Reading over GNOME's desktop-devel mailing list and KDE's Dot News, I stumbled across two sets of user interface and satisfaction surveys that inquire into users think about GNOME and KDE's offerings. The organization performing the inquiry is the Human Aspects of Software Engineering (HASE) group over at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

I have to be candid in saying that I am surprised to see that a link to the surveys never made it here to, so I am including the links below for those who are interested in participating:

I've had great success using

I've had great success using Totem with Xine backend and proprietary plugins. Plays everything except the very latest wmv's that haven't been reverse engineered yet. For those in Ubuntu, just search for "Totem" in Synaptic Package Manager, and once you install totem-xine, select edit->preferences->proprietary plugins and extract the codecs from the essential codec pack (grab it from mplayer's website) into the window that pops up.

As for network transparency, I'm afraid it's not there yet. I have smb shares all over the place and they work like a dream since I can use mount -t smbfs. However, try mounting an ssh connection and editing some of the files with gedit. As for vim, you can forget about it right now.
