GStreamer Plugins 0.8.8 'Fluded' released

GStreamer
GStreamer

We have another GStreamer plugins 0.8.8 release with a sizeable number of bugs fixed, 99 if my counting is correct. Ronald Bultje has continued his bugfixing work and also merged a lot of patches from many other contributors fixing and adding important stuff. We now support even more weird/broken files of various formats and more work has gone into improving DVD support (still not 100%).

A nice gimmick in this release is the puzzle plugin. So you can open gstreamer-properties and change the videosink to custom with something like 'puzzle ! xvimagesink' as the custom videosink. Then whenever you play a video in totem it will be a puzzle game and you need to puzzle your videos to view them.

A big thanks to both patch submitters and bug submitters. We wouldn't have been able to find and fix all this bugs without the great effort by the community to test and help us find testcases to identify bugs. Keep up submitting bugs and we will continue to try and fix them.

GStreamer has had playback st

GStreamer has had playback stability issues for a long time, but that is no longer the case. Most users report that Totem, with GStreamer as a backend, just works for them. No buts, no yets, no this or that. It just works. Half a year ago we promised working playback support for GNOME 2.10, I think we've done well.

It may still have issues, obviously. Our software is not bug-free. Please come online on IRC or open a bug report in Bugzilla with all the necessary information and I will happily help you debug it.

all I know

is that I upgraded everything with 2.10 and decided to give totem-gstreamer a chance again. So I uninstalled totem-xine and installed totem-gstreamer and *poof* segfaults every time.

In case you are curious, I'm using Matt Hall's RPMS from nrpms.net. Maybe he is just screwing these rpms up but regardless, I find these problems with gstreamer very frequently and I have never, ever, ever, had a bad xine package from anyone.

I'm sure it segfaults, but un

I'm sure it segfaults, but unless we find out *why* it segfaults, it will continue segfaulting until eternity. Please come on IRC to help us find the problem and fix it.

Business and Pleasure

Seriously... They are doing it for fun. But also - This plugin is going to use parts of gstreamer that haven't been used before, breaking things and allowing them to fix otherwise hidden bugs. This toy is going to help a lot with stability :)

Re: Business and Pleasure

Good point, that was rather ungrateful of me. Keep up the good work, guys.

P.S.

Go Gstreamer guys!

The new mixer in Gnome 2.10 is absolutely awesome. It will help a lot with usability and it looks much nicer ;)

Quictime Audio?

Does anybody know if this is included / fixed.

At present I can view Quicktime video (Totem - Gstreamer), yet get no sound :-(.

Cheers.

qdm2 (quicktime audio)

It's probably QDM2. The ffmpeg developers are mostly finished reverse engineering it; support for this audio format should be in ffmpeg CVS in a few weeks from now. Hurray for the ffmpeg developers! It'll flow into GStreamer CVS a few days after that.

Of course, as a sidenote, I can't guarantee anything, reverse engineering is a lot more difficult than random joe monkey-coding and I'm not the person doing it.

Quictime Audio??

what is quicktime audio for you ?

quicktime is a container format, like avi, asf, wav, ogg

it can contain a lot of different video/audio streams using differents codecs.

do you mean AAC (MPEG4 high quality audio) ? AAC+DRM ? something else ?
