Hula is a really exciting project already in part because we think that we can fill a hitherto-unclaimed spot in the stack of open source applications and in part because we've "primed the pump" by basing it on an existing, functioning codebase: a Novell product called NetMail. NetMail already runs millions of calendars and mailboxes. And so we're starting off with the mundane work of building a functioning server done, leaving us to focus on creating interesting new functionality.

It's not me but Net thining of Notes

It's not me but Net who obviously thinks of Exchange and Notes. Because he writes about Hula as a _collaboration_ server! And he explicitely mentions Exchange and Notes.
There is only little need for having mail and calendar on a server with a webfrontend (which one can already be done with several solutions). Mail with webfrontend has many great solutions. And For the calendar no server is needed for a single person. Having a calendar on a PDA or mobile and syncing those with the desktop is a way better solution...
The need for a really great groupware sever is much bigger. I mean for example a server that can perfectly work with several clients (MacOS, Linux, Windows, PDA, Web).
