That's false. One complaint was about Metacity insisting to give focus to new windows. That has been fixed (though Metacity does need hints from apps in certain cases and some apps are still buggy--but at least the full infrastructure is there in metacity/gtk+/libwnck/gnome-desktop/startup-notification to get this right if apps will just take the time to use it).

Another bug mentioned while talking about "how bad Metacity sucks and how people never fix bugs" was 166524--which was filed less than three days ago and already has a patch to fix the problem.

I'm not saying Metacity's perfect or anything. In fact, it's far from it. But there has been a lot of work on it in 2.10 and mostly to fix bugs. The other bugs in this thread are noted and they will be worked on as time permits (actually, this thread has been really helpful because it pointed out a couple bugs I was unaware of--bug 136307 since it was filed in the wrong place, and also placing chat windows from GAIM over top of the GAIM contact list (I've never seen a bug report filed on that and haven't observed it myself since I don't use GAIM)).
