Also, why does Metacity insist on placing chat windows from GAIM over top of the GAIM contact list? I end up manually moving it every time.

I've never seen a bug filed about that and the other two bugs you mention are not related as far as I can tell (other than being about other placement bugs that currently exist). Could you file a bug and provide the output of xprop for the chat window that appears over the GAIM contact list? (To do so, type 'xprop | grep -v ^_NET_WM_ICON' in a terminal and then click on the relevant window)
