Yes, I think you are right, and really I'm sure I'm right in this.

Most people do not want choice .. and even hackers do not really care about how many freedom exists in desktop: there is the source and it's ok.

Gnome (from 2.0) came with a standard panel on top which as menu "a la mac" os .. but worst than mac way, of course.

there was propose about implementing a mac like interface, but nobody like it.

gnome desktop is really confuse and actually confuse people.

I prefer some hack over fspanel and get a ms like environment and also I can have a gnome panel for convenience.

MS windows do not have panel applet what is botton right is just a notification area, and is very easy for a programmer to make something appears there.

Gnome panel and panel applets are totally new concept, those can act as a main panel ala ms win, but it's not the same, it's too many advanced for most users.

... but that's not gnome.
