Migration to Drupal

The FootNotes website is currently being migrated to Drupal. I have all of the stories, comments and user accounts merged over.

For those of you that have user accounts, you will need to request a new password.

Over the next several weeks I will be working on migrating the rest of the content as well as tweaking the system.

Not really liking it so far but maybe when the edges have been smoothed out I'll like it a better and it will grow on me.

The different moderation system will take some getting used to.

The current look is really just a 15 minute hack of the pushbutton theme. While I want to do more in the future to enhance it, I do want to keep it looking more simple and cleaner.

I do need to look into the login thing.

Used a slightly modified version of a script mentioned in the drupal.org forums to merge over the articles, user accounts and comments from nuke to drupal. The scripts out there don't recreate the comment thread structure needed for drupal, so I had to write a script to do that.

Old links are currently broken, I probably should do some mod-rewrite magic to map the old links to the new

Sites should set relative sizes of fonts, not absolute sizes.

The fonts should not be specified by the site except as modifications based on whatever you set your browser to use:

  • exs/ems: 0.1em, 1.2em, etc.
  • percentages: 10%, 120%, etc.

So sites shouldn't specify the size of the font, just the proportion relative to something else which the user sets. Only in circumstances where you know what devices will be used to see the site (like a projection in a board room or lecture hall) should sites set font sizes.

If you find the fonts to be too small, use your browser to fix that. Mozilla, for instance, makes it easy to ramp up and down the size of all the fonts in the same proportion.

The header uses a small font, which I wouldn't want to read larger texts. The rest of the site uses exactly the font size which I configured in my browser, so I still don't see what you mean (maybe it was fixed meanwhile).

Tip for mobile devices

If you want to be more compatible with phones/PDAs or other mobile devices' browsers and even text mode unix browsers that happen to have small resolutions, I suggest you move the whole sidebar on the right. This way, these users won't have to scroll kilometres vertically to find the actual content (the sidebar will display alone you see, and then you will have to scroll through it to go the actual content). ;-)

Stro, the frontpage doesn't fit on 800x600. Please remove some of the dead space between the middle news table and the two sidebars, and it should fit well. Thx.

I created a local copy on my machine to see what creates the extra space on the right hand side (thanks for placing the sidebars on the left-only, much better now).
So, now that the sidebar is only on the left, IE can render fine on 800x600. But Firefox still has problems with the front page, it doesn't fit. I found that the problem can be located here:

style type="text/css" media="all" @import "http://gnomedesktop.org/themes/pushbutton/style.css";

Removing the css, it fixes firefox's extra space. It seems that one of the css elements on that file is not fully compatible with firefox. I am not sure which one though.

it seems you state the obvious to state nothing at all. of course the style comes from the css. of course removing the css will remove the style. the question is WHICH is the offending line? how do you even know its one line in the first place?

Just curious. What was wrong with phpNuke and was is good about drupal? From my point of view it mainly seems like a style change but I'm sure there is more under the hood. One annoying thing though is the flat, threaded comments. That makes it a lot harder to read.

Not to disparage the use of Drupal (I'm no fan of the phpnuke), but if there are multiple joins necessary to pull the comments out with one query and you're using MySQL for the database, then it's likely that the single query will be slower than an approach using multiple simple queries.

A year or so ago I ended up optimising a site's large threaded discussions by pulling out each comment individually, then storing the query results in a caching layer in shm. This gave a vastly superior performance gain than pulling the thread out in one query. MySQL's joins and complex queries seem to have a few optimisation pitfalls.

The fetching of the comments happens in one query, and the comments come out in threaded order, without doing multiple joins on the same table.

The only join that is done is for fetching the user information (picture, name, ...).
