Re: Desktop Integration Bounty: Check-in 2 Cheque-out !!!!

It is not that simple. The coherence of the gnome community is important. Hanging out bounties for people to implement features for apps where the maintainers of those apps were not consulted or are not interested is insulting and creates divisions withing the community.

It does matter if it is coming from gnome or novell. There is a lot of momentum that epiphany gained and maintains because it was officially sanctioned by gnome as being the default gnome web browser. Diluting that perception erroneously by implying that gnome has gotten behind firefox steals from that momentum.

Related to that second point is an issue of momentum and coordination of development efforts in general. Calling out for random features to be hacked in sideways to an existing application infrastructure diverts potential development resources and in the end can create more problems because extra features should not be "hacked in". A coordinated effort should be organized to create appropriate backend infrastructure so that adding the desired features is easy and natural development.

Not that all feature bounties fall into these traps but clearly that is the case for some so caution and community oversight ("protest") is in order.
