Re: gTweakUI 0.0.6 released

You are missing the issue that this app is trying to address if you think that gnome will address this problem. Of course this could be addressed by gnome and the apps themselves but the problem is that many developers don't want to. There is a strong contingent of gnome developers ( and a few users) that are more interested in ripping out every possible option than adding new ones. This app is to allow people who don't like that direction to have acces to their configuration even if the options do not exist in the app itself.

This was the original promise of gconf-editor, that gnome2 would have a cleaner interface but that the power would still lie under the hood for any power users to access if they wanted to. Unfortunately, everyone forgot that in their "make it dumber" zeal and the power got ripped out of many apps along with the preferences guis (epiphany). Also, gconf editor has been largely abandoned in a not very friendly state. gconf editor is a nasty and error prone app to use. No search and no dropdown for key enum options, etc. So, in the end it is the power users who have been screwed (no pun intended) since many did not scream when the interface was dumbed down thinking that the backend would still exist for them but it did not.

This app will at least help with the fact that gconf-editor sucks so bad to use. If it is pointless and will die it will not be because "gnome will take care of it itself" but because if things continue there will be no advanced options left in gconf to set! Then the non-idiot user will be really out in the cold with gnome.
