Gnome, Mozilla and the Challenge of Longhorn

Gnome 2.x
Gnome 2.x

With lots of talk recently about mono/java/python, it seems like a response to Longhorn and XAML is brewing. People at mozilla are talking about how to create an alliance against the hegemon. Co-operation with gnome is discussed on mozillazine. I do hope that gnome can use the XUL language or something like it so that gui programming is easy for us mere mortals. Lets not re-invent the wheel reproducing XAML when we've already got XUL!

Re: Gnome, Mozilla and the Challenge of Longhorn

Mozilla is already a viable cross platform solution for many XUL applications.

That said, the XUL platform is still lacking in many areas, such as most applications still requiring native compiled components. However XUL does deliver the possibility for rich application interfaces to remote applications where most of the application logic is server side and accessed using SOAP etc.

The difficulty with advocating which way the the trend will be is the readiness of XUL vs the relatively low adoption of the Mozilla browser. XAML is still not here, but people are already afraid of it or desperately eager for it. It most likely come with a user friendly IDE for RAD far simpler than current XUL apps. Lastly if the technology is as widely deployed as windows, then it will have a vast market just based on its current users. (Assuming the upgrade to longhorn is far more dramatic than the upgrade to XP)
