Gnome, Mozilla and the Challenge of Longhorn

Gnome 2.x
Gnome 2.x

With lots of talk recently about mono/java/python, it seems like a response to Longhorn and XAML is brewing. People at mozilla are talking about how to create an alliance against the hegemon. Co-operation with gnome is discussed on mozillazine. I do hope that gnome can use the XUL language or something like it so that gui programming is easy for us mere mortals. Lets not re-invent the wheel reproducing XAML when we've already got XUL!

Re: Gnome, Mozilla and the Challenge of Longhorn

How does MS threat OSS?

Comparing say assembler to C and native vs. JIT compilers is a different thing.

The main purpose of JIT is AFAIK to abstract the plaform so that the developer doesn't have to concentrate on that.

All the hurdles with porting fade away.

Strategically a JIT compiler makes no sense for general purpose apps. At all.

We don't need portable GNOME or any of its applications. We don't need remote GNOME or any of its applications. We're OSS. We need more applications, pieces that are misaing. Were getting ther slowly, we should not hurry. Let's do it slowly, but let's do it properly.
