Gnome, Mozilla and the Challenge of Longhorn

Gnome 2.x
Gnome 2.x

With lots of talk recently about mono/java/python, it seems like a response to Longhorn and XAML is brewing. People at mozilla are talking about how to create an alliance against the hegemon. Co-operation with gnome is discussed on mozillazine. I do hope that gnome can use the XUL language or something like it so that gui programming is easy for us mere mortals. Lets not re-invent the wheel reproducing XAML when we've already got XUL!

Re: Gnome, Mozilla and the Challenge of Longhorn

What we need right now is hardcore C/C++ developers and usability experts / UI designers to deliver slow but precise work on missing parts of our beloved desktop.

That's what we've been doing from the start. While yes, it produces results, it's terribly slow when compared to .NET. Whip up a text editor in hardcore C and then do the same with mono...I'll bet you any amount of money that you can do it quicker in mono (unless you're a C professional and have never had any experience in OO programming). The point is that the development world is changing, and unless the community adapts we will be left in the dust. Gnome will always exist, but I've doubts that anyone on this board wants it to fade into obscurity.

Think of it this way: had people maintained this mentality back in the 60's with this revolutionary "high-level C brew-ha-ha", we'd all be writing programs in Fortran and COBOL.

The world is dynamic...that's the nature of our free market: those who compete and innovate are successful. If one company is successful, it means its cometitors fade into obscurity. Well whether the Gnome project means to or not, it poses a direct threat to Microsoft's business, and they'll stop at nothing to close it down.
