Mark Finlay passes away

Mark Finlay passed away peacefully at home on Friday 9th January 2004.
Mark was the driving force behind the creation of the GNOME Users Board, where he helped numerous people learn to use GNOME. He was also a contributor to Rhythmbox, Gossip and numerous other GNOME projects. To quote Jeff Waugh "Mark Finlay was young, eager, furiously energetic and just heading into university - where I'm sure he would have blossomed into a great GNOME and Free Software hacker."

Re: Mark Finlay passes away

Mark was one of the brightest, most upbeat proponents GNOME has ever had. His desire to contribute and to improve the experience of users everywhere despite his illness is a testament to his commitment to the free desktop experience.

It's always sad when a young life is short. We, the GNOME users and developers have lost a lot. There is no doubt in my mind that Mark would have been an excellent GNOME advocate and developer. Yet, even in the short time that he has spent here, Mark made a difference. He's shown us all what a truly energetic and motivated person can do. He will be missed greatly by me and the rest of the GNOME community.

I actually had the pleasure of talking and working with Mark when the GNOME Users Board was being started. However, over time my commitment decreased while his increased. His death has been a wakeup call for me. I hope to renew my commitment to the GNOME community and contribute to the level he has.
