Expocity - efficient application switching

Metacity Window Manager
Metacity Window Manager

expocity is an effort to integrate an efficient means of switching between applications into the window manager metacity. After pressing a keystroke, your window manager will present you a complete overview of all open windows and you can select the window, you want to switch to, visually.
You no longer have to search a too full taskbar or the tablist for the right window. Just point at it.

Everybody is talking about such a feature and that it would require the new freedesktop.org X-Server... well, expocity is an extension for metacity enabling this on a standard X-Server!

More info and a screenshot can be found
here.

If you want to try it out yourself, get the patch from
here and apply it to the current CVS version of metacity.

Have fun! .... Martin Grimme

Re: Expocity - efficient application switching

I'm not sure I understand. Can someone clarify for me how this would work...

Instead of a virtual desktops... I would be able to switch to a particular app to be displayed. How would this work for the following:

I want to use two apps at the same time... say for drag-n-drop purposes. How would I select both of them to be displayed? Simple as two clicks on separate windows and an "Enter"?

I'm assuming that dialogs and child windows would always follow the parent window.

Thanx for any help in clarifying this for me.

...

great idea. I really like it. At the moment... my using 6 virtual desktops... multiple apps... searching for the one i want to use... well, it's a bit too troublesome.

Though... now that I think about it, what's the difference between this and a zoomed in large scale view of the desk-switcher applet with high quality thumbnail support?
