After the recent release of GSwitchit featured on this site there has been some talk about the need to have a complete free set of
international flags available in SVG format for many different uses, both inside and outside GNOME. We want this set of flags to be as free as possible, available in the public domain . Our friends over at Sodipodi are already of
to a great start with many flags contributed from GNOME and Sodipodu users. But we need more, so go over to the current flag gallery to see if your favourite flags still needs making. Then fire up Sodipodi and start drawing. If you are unsure about exact colours and proportions be sure to check out flagspot.net for details. When you are done send the flag(s) to sodipodi-list@lists.sourceforge.net where Bryce Harrington is sitting ready to put it up on the site. Please clearly state that you dedicating your SVG flag to the public domain.. As the collection grows we will start to put out tarballs with the complete collection. Who knows maybe we even will get featured on the Creative Commons website :)
Also please mention this article in your blogs and websites, so that as many people as possible gets to know about it, if enough people send in flags this could become a great example of the power of creative collaboration.

Update: We have now reached 158 flags and moved the flags into a new nicer looking clipart sectionUpdate: blogged by Lawrence Lessig. Thanks to everyone involved!
Update:: sodipodi-flags module imported into sodipodi CVS with all the currently submitted flags. Where duplicates we have tried to choose the most correct one in relation to proportions and coloring.
Update:: Over 90 flags submitted so far! Keep em coming. Sodipodi Gallery updated
Update: For flags where the official size is not a 3:2 aspect we would like both a version in the correct aspect and a 3:2 version. The reason is that for use in software it is often important to have the flags available in the same size. (Sorry that this page said 4:3 first, the correct measurement is this one, the same as been on the Sodipodi page all the time.

Update: Submitted flags should be resized to 140mm for the height of the flag. The width comes from the flags own correct aspect ratio.

Re: huh? Why Public Domain???

I'd like to support that position. Maybe GPL is a bit harsh, but with LGPL we would at least get back improvements to the flags themselves ...
