The argument in favor of pre-loading

Memory is cheap and I have plenty. What pisses me off is the time it takes to boot. Even that wouldn't piss me off if I could disable it, but I can't...which is why I like the ability to pre-load Moz., and wish this was in Fb.

In any case, for a long time I was angry at MS for making windows take so much longer to load, but eventually I came around. I never reboot my machine except for critical windows updates, so having it preloaded makes a lot of sense. For this reason IE quickly became my favorite browser for windows, even though I knew it was cheating, and despite being an avid NS fan all the way up to 4.x (ok, at that point I was just being stubborn).

After many years of IE acceptance and enjoyment, and monthly trials of Mozilla (which I have always hated, mostly because it was so much like NS 4.x), I found Firebird .3. By .4 I was using Fb as my primary browser, and now I don't even miss IE (in fact I actually get angry when having to use it).

Which brings me back to my point. The only major thing missing for Fb is pre-loading, IMO. Yes, it loads much faster Moz., but this isn't saying much. On fast machines, it takes much longer than IE to load (especially the 2nd time), and is slower than Moz if Moz is trayed. I probably open a browser 100 times a day (hotkeys). I don't like them open all the time. I end up leaving Fb open because it takes too long to load, but that annoys me.

Yes, IE's preloading is cheating (can't turn it off), but Fb's wouldn't be (optional). And for users who don't care about a slightly longer boot (hey, you'll pay the price when you load Fb anyway, why not just do it once?) and have plenty of memory, the only question is: why not?

Although it annoys me that MS cheated, I actually benefited from their decision for many years, and was grateful, especially since IE was the best browser for so long. Now that it isn't the best (IMO), I wish I could turn off that preloading. But more than that, I wish I could turn it on for Fb.
