The past two weeks have been very good for the team. We've had some of the remote hackers (Michael, Mike, Larry, JP) in town, which gave us a chance to make a lot of progress on the 2.0 plans.

I have to disagree. I know a few IT-illiterate people who use evolution and they use the shortcut bar as the main way to move between often used (email) folders and the other often used components.

Actually, as you can hide the shortcut bar, and as folders in the old display-all tree view could be collapsed, I'd argue that the buttons waste more space. Try it, hide the shortcut bar and collapse five unused (equivalent to the 6 minus 1 active buttons) folders. That leaves you with much more screen estate for the remainder of the folder tree.

I do agree though that tabs aren't better than the buttons. (but personally I'd move the buttons above the folder tree)
