The past two weeks have been very good for the team. We've had some of the remote hackers (Michael, Mike, Larry, JP) in town, which gave us a chance to make a lot of progress on the 2.0 plans.

The problem with tabs is the exact same problem with the original shortcut bar, only now horizontal.

Have you use gaim before? If yes, then it has the feature that you can do the right (vertical), left (vertical), top (horizontal) and bottom (horizontal).. Also, you even can use mouse to get tab out of window to get its own window. This is very flexible and I love it!

If I understood the reasons correctly, the user modifiable bars are rarely used and mostly waste space. The fixed size buttons allow more real estate, and are perceived to not lose anything in the transition.

I don't understand how can the tab wastes space? Can you show me? I find that the tab feature always help to get the things not look too crowd like what the shortcut bar/buttons did.

But that might just be me, I love mouseover-autohide type behavior.

Yuck, I don't like mouseover-autohide but add the ability option for this will be nice, thought.
