State of the GnuCash project

GnuCash
GnuCash

The GnuCash project is having a hard time. We may be headed for a dead end if we don't reorganize and refocus our
efforts. GnuCash badly needs more manpower (not just developers), and needs
to get it quickly.

What more do you want?

I guess that is part of what I see as the issue. There is nothing more than I really want in GnuCash - it does everything I want - and I'm still on 1.6.x. I think that The GIMP kinda has the same problem - they've lost a lot of developers once no one has an 'itch to scratch'.

Now, I don't know how to solve this problem. One solution may be something like samba-ng. Where you basically fork the project to do some new, crazy stuff, while you leave the basic stuff coming out with new versions. Not sure though. I would hate to see this get bitrotted, but it seems like it is going that way.

Okay, I just had another idea (light goes on). Perhaps what would help out the most would be dividing up GnuCash into more libraries - so that potential developers would have smaller barriers to entry. Things like the register could be a library - and other apps may even use it. One thing I'd love to see is GnuCash using the GnomeDB stuff. I think one thing that has kept GNOME maintainable is that there are quite a few different peices.
