Just would like to point out my moment of revelation on this whole issue.

I was finding gnome-terminal horribly slow, now I don;t count myself as a speed freak, but cat'ing files, running any curses apps was just getting to be a nightmare. So I tried reverting back to my old xterm + screen faithful, congrats to you, I couldn't use it, it was hell, so I went in search of the answer to my gnome-terminal issues.

I found it, recompiling gnome-terminal to use the old vte widget sorted me out no probs.

1. I found this on Miguels site.

2. The option for compiling with zvt2 has now been removed.

Perhaps there is some obscure fontconfig hack I can use to get vte to work acceptably (though I doubt that would solve my term emulation issues with mutt), if there is I can't find it.

Out of the box gnome-terminal is just a bloodey awful terminal with a nice tab feature. Apparently the community is happy with that. But as Miguel said on his site, some of us need to get some work done.
