John was also hired by them pretty late in the game, iirc. I wouldn't lump him in with the rest - that was a strategic aqusition for them and it hasn't proven to be effective after all as sawmill/sawfish is no longer the default for GNOME. That fact will likely prove to be significant for the long term future of the wm.
