Here at Ximian we have been brainstorming a bit about what happens
next in the Evolution world. One of the ideas that has come up is a
substantial overhaul of Evolution's UI.

Since images speak better than words, here are the mockups for some
designs that Anna has developed: (this is just to give a very rough
idea of what it would be like; the icons and labels are not final, the
widgets are not the real ones etc.)

This stuff looks great! I've never been a fan of the shortcut bar (even in Outlook), and I like the idea of the folders with the main buttons at the bottom.

If I may offer two enhancement requests (I know one of these is in bugzilla):

- have Evolution put its stuff in a ".evolution" folder instead of "evolution" in my home directory. I like to keep a tidy top-level (home) directory structure, and it's a little annoying when apps do their housekeeping in plain view.

- have a mini calendar view in the mail perspective. Lotus Notes a cumbersome and unintuitive monstrosity, but the mini calendar is the one feature I really like. This might be a bear to implement in Evolution, but I find it quite handy to see the week-at-a-glance in a small box next to the mail headers.
