Evolution 2.0 UI proposal

Evolution
Evolution

Here at Ximian we have been brainstorming a bit about what happens
next in the Evolution world. One of the ideas that has come up is a
substantial overhaul of Evolution's UI.

Since images speak better than words, here are the mockups for some
designs that Anna has developed: (this is just to give a very rough
idea of what it would be like; the icons and labels are not final, the
widgets are not the real ones etc.)

Some quibbles

Personally I like the current "all-in-one tree" view, but it's not a strong preference. I agree that the new independent views is a better design that allows more functionality to be added to each view.

One quibble I have is that the "buttons on the bottom" view selector really should be above the "select a view" dropdown control. It's seems more intuitive for two reasons:

* people generally work from the top down not the bottom up (which is why most tabs are on the top instead of the bottom)

* There are two ways to change views -- the dropdown menu above the view and the buttons on the bottom. There are two ways to interprete the "buttons on the bottom" bar. The first is that the buttons are actually a subfunction of the dropdown menu, the same way the "Mark for Installation"/.../"Information" buttons are a subfunction of the tabs in RedCarpet (see this link for details). Alternately, you can interprete the "buttons on the bottom" bar to be completely separate from the view, much like the sidebar in OpenOffice (see this link for details). Neither of these common interpretations give the impression of what the actual function of the "buttons on the bottom" bar is, which is "an alternate way to select the current view if you don't like the dropdown menu".
