GNOME Development Series Desktop 2.3.3:

Gnome 2.x
Gnome 2.x

The GNOME Development Series Desktop 2.3.3 "The Four Hounds", is ready for
your bug-busting and testing pleasure! It is available for immediate
download on ftp.gnome.org and mirrors.

tar.gz: 120M total
tar.bz2: 90M total

For Developers and Testers!
---------------------------

This release is a feature-frozen, development series snapshot. It is used by
developers and testers as their day-to-day working desktop, and is ready for
wider testing by our user community. Like the Linux kernel, GNOME uses odd
minor version numbers to indicate development status, so this 2.3.x series
will eventually become the official 2.4 release. Please check the 2.3 start
page for more information: http://www.gnome.org/start/2.3/

Build Requirements
------------------

- The tarballs included in the release. :-)

- Some very basic packages not distributed with this release, such as
image libraries, popt and freetype. These should all be included with or
available for your distribution.

- Xft2 and fontconfig for superior font rendering and configuration,
preferably from http://fontconfig.org/ NOT XFree86 4.3.x.

- Docbook DTD 4.1.2, Docbook XSL stylesheets and a valid system catalogue
file for scrollkeeper (which in turn is required by many desktop
components for documentation).

Happy testing!
- The GNOME Release Team

Epiphany 0.7.3

The release address a critical bug that have been reported.

In the 0.7.2 release notes I forgot to mention that we had to
reorganize gconf prefs keys, so the previous configuration will be lost.

Also the smart bookmarks format is changed and it will be necessary to
readd them. Now it's possible to edit them in the user interface though, just
typing the url in the Address field of properties and using %s.

Interface improvements

* Display tooltips on toolbars (Marco)

GNOME-games 2.3.4

Things are cruising along towards a nice, stable, 2.4 release.
This release mostly contains bug fixes and clean-ups.

A big thanks goes to Jon McCann and Steve Chaplin who have done most
of the work on this release.

The TODO file now has a complete list of what we hope to complete for
2.4 and an incomplete list of what is planned for 2.5 and beyond.

Be warned that changes involving gconf mean that some preferences will
be lost. Selecting the correct preferences again will fix this. We
apologise for the inconvenience, but the change-over from gnome-config
to gconf had already been delayed way too long for some games.

This is still an unstable release, but it should be more stable than
2.2 and testing is badly needed. In particular gnobots2 and mahjongg
have produced a number of crashes which aren't reproducible on the
maintainers machines. Stack traces or precise instructions on how to
reproduce them (including OS version, library versions, etc.) are
desparately needed to try and track these down.

All games have improved HIG compliance and most menus are now context
sensitive, e.g. you can't select undo if no move has been made.

AisleRiot:
The help files work with yelp (even the broken versions).
There should be better compatibility with Red Hat 9's guile.

Glines:
The background is now a solid colour and the grid lines are thinner.

Gnome-stones:
New opening title that should be i18n compatible now.

Gnotravex:
The game is now resizable, try it, we hope to make most games like
this in 2.5.

GNOME-games 2.3.3

13% Fewer bugs, 15% less fat and 7% more games.

We now have a blackjack game courtesy of Jon McCann.

The package has also lost 1.5 Mb due to the judicious use of jpeg
compression.

For the paranoid system administrator there are now the
--disable-setgid, --with-scores-group and --with-scores-user options
for configure to help you manage those pesky setgid binaries.

The major changes, game by game:

aisleriot:
* Should stop crashing if you have libguile >1.5.
* More i18n work. Still not perfect, but should be a lot better.

gataxx:
* The corruption when using the undo button has been fixed.
* Don't crash after 128 turns.
* Gataxx is now bug-free (TM).

gdk-card-image:
* Some extra card images. Look for the "Dondorf" images.

gnome-stones:
* There are now some sokoban levels to play. Thanks go to Alberto
Manuel Brandao Simoes for convering the levels from Herman
Mansilla's Yakoban game. Select the Gnomekoban levels from the
preferences dialog and don't forget about the "restart level"
option when you back youself into a corner.
* There has been no real chance for play-testing these levels yet
against the current sokoban implementation, if you have any
suggestions to make feel free to file a report in bugzilla (even if
it isn't technically a bug).

gnometris:
* "Paused" and "Game over" messages.
* Key behaviour fixes when a new piece appears.
* Scoring consistency: dropping the blocks now scores as much as
using fast-fall with the down arrow.
* Big PNG backgrounds converted to jpeg. The transition should happen
automatically and not be noticeable.

mahjongg:
* The multiple score dialogs problem might have been fixed this time.

Lots of fixes for behaviour and i18n all over the place, thanks should
especially go to Steve Chaplin and Christian Rose for their patience
in making sure I did things properly.

gnome-sound-recorder, net-rhythmbox
, sound-juicer

and nautilus-media.

The video part is known to be somewhat less functional than the audio
part, but applications such as gst-player work
very well, and a port of Totem is in
progress in GNOME CVS.

We will also be releasing a development 0.7 release series, in which we
will work on such things as the remaining issues, such as the
interactivity support which is needed for DVD menus and SWF (Flash).
This means developers working on apps needing these services can use the
0.7 series for development and then enable 0.6 support as these
additions optionally get backported to 0.6 once they are stable and work
well.

The GStreamer applications we ship all check for both gstreamer-0.6,
gstreamer-libs-0.6 and gstreamer-play-0.6; if those aren't found the 0.7
version of those files are checked for. We suggest anyone making
GStreamer-based apps do the same.

We are starting to have a really nice collection of applications under
development using GStreamer. If you are looking for something specific
check out our applications status page

Re: GNOME Development Series Desktop 2.3.3:

It seems to me that a simple solution would be to have the default path of "extract to..." be the current working directory. That way it is only one click and one enter key away. It is clear howevr that one of the three options has to stay while the others go. Maybe "extract here to folder" should stay, and anyone who wants to move it should do so manually using nautilus?

Cheers,

Ryan
