NO. You have misunderstood what I am suggesting. First, the focusing/tab model that I am talking about is identical to what is used in ms windows. Do you know how that works? That is what I mean.

In case you don't know how windows tabbing works I will explain:

If you have a form with mutilple text boxes, then tab will navigate between the text boxes as long as they are logically part of the same form. It is possible in some cases that tab will also take you between different forms when that makes sense. For example, in a web page, tab will take you through links in the page and also through the form and out the end of the form back into the links.

Ctrl-tab is used for changing focus between large groups of elements. For example in evolution, ctrl-tab should (but does not) take you between the folder view and the mail list view and the preview where you can then use normal keys like arrows or tabs to navigate around. The outlook clone (yes it is) does this wrong. Outlook does this.

Ctrl-tab can also be used to navigate through tabs for same reason. The meaning is the same.

ctrl-tab = change focus between major element groups

tab = change focus between individual elements

(I'm pretty sure in retrospect that I was actually pretty clear on this in my previous post)

Continuing with this ctrl-tab usage, in the case of the address menu, it is a matter of how you define the address bar. Is it a single element? Or it is a group of elements. I think the answer is just, which definitiion is most useful and expected? Defining it as a group (so you can use tab to navigate through elements in the drop down) is obviously most powerful/useful. For anyone who is savvy with keyboard navigation this will actually be what is expected also. For people who are not keyboard navigation savvy, this could be a surprise, however, keyboard navigation is by definition an expert way to use an application interface (except in accesability cases). I am an engineer. I work in front of a workstation all day. So do all my coworkers. I have seen maybe one or two of them use keyboard navigation in any form except simple tabbing through forms. Tabbing through toolbars?? Yeah right. That is something nobody actaully uses.

As for people who must use the keyboard for navigation because of a disability, ctrl-tab is not harder than alt-tab. They can do it. And it gives them the option to quickly move to the group of elements they are interested in instead of typing tab 1000 times to get to a specific element.

I really love it. I read an article where havoc was interviewed and when asked what he thought of the windows ui he said he didn't know it at all! Nice. Rip of rumours of ui conventions from windows but arrogantly snub a full investigation so you don't even get it right. Windows (dare I say it?) has tab navigation right!
