New GNOME2 default theme proposal

Eugenia over at OSnews has published a proposal for a new default theme for GNOME2. This is a follow-up to a recent article
about GNOME2 where she says: "Gnome's default widget look is a very boring one, and maybe one of its weak points [...] most users stay with the defaults, so these should be attractive and make sense". I must say the proposed theme looks very, very nice, and I would really want to see this as the default GNOME theme.

Re: New GNOME2 default theme proposal

The mock up looks fairly nice, but like with most eye candy, there is some hideous crap that makes you want to gouge your eyes out. (One of the reasons I don't use KDE is the unprofessional look of 99% of the themes).

I like the flat rounded councept is very appealing, when done right, but the problem I can't ignore is the blue regions. Every other part of the mockup has a moderate color blend at most. The blue changes color just too much. Especially in regards to the far right on option widget.

The troughs (sp?) for the sliders, the top checkbox, the icon in the toolbar, the raised button, and the added lines in the tree view look odd/out of place/ugly.

Another matter where gnome artists strive (for the most part) and this fails is consistancy. The artist keeps jumping between thick and thin borders. Also, the curves aren't all in accordance, so when for example, someone selects the top option in a list, the border of the selection would touch/overlap with the outer border of the list widget. (If this isn't clear, its because I didn't compose my thoughts.)

Also in regards to list views, it seems that there are 2 different styles, one with lines between items and one without. A choice needs to be made in regards to this, as they (including tree view) are the same widget and widgets should produce consistant results.

In regards to ZSnake (or whatever?), ****ing ****. It may have advantages, it may not. Now you are playing God with someone elses tool kit. GTK developers chose not to use ZSnake, and BeOS and the like did. Why should they conform to the standards of others when they have already establshed their own. (Instead of 2 operating systems, we'll look like 3!) I'll let the other things slide, but this just crosses the line into stupidity. What real functionality does it provide, what benifit does it have for people migrating from more mainstream desktops? Rewriting something trivial so you can have your eye candy? Give me a break. (If others disagree with me, oh well, you may in fact get your snake.)

Just my two cents. I'll be happy to clarify/apologise upon request.
