You have a point, but I would probably base such a distro on Debian. With a new installer and a new much simpler package manager (with only Gnome 2 apps if that's what you want). It would be a great beginners distro, and it could be upgraded to a full-blown Debian just by typing something at the command line. Plus, any improvements made to the desktop could be brought back into Debian.

Man, I'm getting kind of excited. :-)
