Writing Yet Another Library is daft - it's a waste of time, and nobody will use it without decent mass behind it, unless it offers something truly unique - and what is unique about Yet Another System Wrapper?

Alternatively to GTK-based solutions, there's Qt - it's pretty much what you describe right now. And GPL'd, iirc - only that means you can't do commercial/closed-source apps with it...
