AbiWord
AbiWord

Bonobo work is progressing so rapidly, that I swear I just saw it inside of Nautilus the other day...actually, I did. SuSE in, SuSE out, SuSE's back on again if you're looking for packages for that dangerous distribution, thanks to James Ogley. More HIGrrrification^(TM) under development with three screenshots hidden in their own section of the developers' list. GNOME-enable'ers, fear not, it's not you, it's that french guy...Hub declares a great owing of donuts.

I'd use AbiWord if...

It wouldn't take much to get me to migrate from OpenOffice to AbiWord, but those areas that seem to be lacking are enough to prevent it now.

1) Outline format. This is, quite frankly, horrible. I have no use for an outline that uses period delineated Roman numerals. Perhaps some people use it, but an outline that looks like: I, I.I, I.I.I, is not acceptable for an academic outline. This, combined with the fact that the auto indenting and the sizes of the indents are non-intuitive and very difficult to mess with. Yuck.

2) Footnotes. The first time I made a footnote with AbiWord 1.1.3, I couldn't figure out how to return the cursor to the body of the document. Then, I discovered that it doesn't handle "smart" foot notes like OpenOffice. I need to be able to backspace over the footnote in the body and have it remove the footnote at the bottom of the page, renumbering and redrawing the page on the fly. If I go back and add another footnote in the middle, it needs to renumber and respace to acommodate.
