XFree86 Politics & Keith Packard

PCLinuxOnline is reporting that Keith Parkard wants to fork the XFree86 effort and has subsequently been removed from the XFree86 core team. The issue in general. and if GNOME should send out a statement supporting Keith, is currently being discussed by various GNOME community members on the GNOME Foundation mailing list. The issue is also being discussed on slashdot.

Why not a fork?

Truth is, the XFree86 project is the XFree86 developer's. They have every right to do what they want with it, even if it means slowly trudging along while other projects flourish. Frankly, I haven't read a single post in support for the current core developers handling of the project.

If a fork DOES happen, you can bet that it will be more democratic in the way decisions are made and the EVERYONE would switch to it (except perhaps those who've a vested interest in XFree86). It would be like the whole project just moved to a new name leaving the other 12 or less core developers to play with their toy.

I know I'm being simplistic, but not entirely so. for certain, there'd be a time of confusion and non-productivity, but in the end, IF a fork DOES occur, it'd be for the best.

Personally, I'm hoping that things just change within XFree86 which are more in line with KeithP's (and Keith simply reflects what a whole slew of other developers are thinking) vision.
