PCLinuxOnline is reporting that Keith Parkard wants to fork the XFree86 effort and has subsequently been removed from the XFree86 core team. The issue in general. and if GNOME should send out a statement supporting Keith, is currently being discussed by various GNOME community members on the GNOME Foundation mailing list. The issue is also being discussed on slashdot.

Re: XFree86 Politics & Keith Packard

For the love of god I hope they don't fork. I know the issues a bit and I have read all the posts on the list.

Primarily the speed of inclusion for patches and new drivers and such are my big bitches but I am sure everyone here has their favorite XFree86 project peeve.

It does not matter. It is better (unless a group from the inside has a radical new approach or model to use) not to fork but to improve the situation internally. For radically different goals new projects are good. For simply diversions in subtle philosophy, I would hate to see a fork. Keith's points are almost all very good but they are not fundamental issues with the entire approach, scope or technological functions of the software. The issues are more subtle so I hope that the problems can be resolved internally.

Just my 2 cents and all that crap.
