PCLinuxOnline is reporting that Keith Parkard wants to fork the XFree86 effort and has subsequently been removed from the XFree86 core team. The issue in general. and if GNOME should send out a statement supporting Keith, is currently being discussed by various GNOME community members on the GNOME Foundation mailing list. The issue is also being discussed on slashdot.

Re: XFree86 Politics & Keith Packard

I really hope they find a way to make Keith happy without forking; the most obvious solution would be to listen to his critiques more and open up a bit. I don't know if Keith has any differences of opinion on technical aspects of the project, so I don't know if I'd agree with those or not.

Although, a fork would cause minimal 'damage' since most projects are already X server agnostic.

And, if a fork does occur, I hope he changes the name to something recognizably different; well, unless he truly plans on merging his changes back in. Hopefully the license would stay the same too, it'd make sharing changes between the two projects easier.

Anyway, I'm done rambling :).
