PCLinuxOnline is reporting that Keith Parkard wants to fork the XFree86 effort and has subsequently been removed from the XFree86 core team. The issue in general. and if GNOME should send out a statement supporting Keith, is currently being discussed by various GNOME community members on the GNOME Foundation mailing list. The issue is also being discussed on slashdot.

I agree with Alan Cox for various reasons - this is good

I think another free X would create a good duality like Gnome and KDE. Or even better perhaps: like Redhat and Debian because they could be drop-in replacements for each other - with different capabilitys but the same basic functionality.

We are losing a lot of productivity because people want to work on making X better (or a better X) and at the moment they're not allowed. This could be a channel for that productivity and creativity.
